Our Top 5 Favourite Views on the Gralloch Sportive Route
If there’s one thing riders tell us time and again about The Gralloch Sportive, it’s this: the views stay with you long after the legs have recovered.
Winding through the heart of the Galloway Forest Park and the GSA UNESCO Biosphere, the Sportive routes are designed to be challenging, rewarding and deeply memorable. This is gravel riding at its most immersive, where every climb earns its panorama and every quiet stretch of forest road invites you to slow down, look up and soak it all in.
With that in mind, here are our five favourite views on the Gralloch Sportive route. Five moments that perfectly capture why this journey through south-west Scotland is so special.

Solway View
Not long after rolling out of Gatehouse of Fleet, the Fawn route begins to rise gently along Laurieston Road. As the town slips away behind you, the landscape opens up and suddenly the Solway Firth comes into view.
On a clear day, the vista stretches all the way towards the coast, with wide skies, patchwork farmland and, if you’re lucky, a faint outline of the Isle of Man hovering on the horizon. It’s a moment that quietly sets the tone for the day ahead. You’re leaving the everyday behind and heading somewhere bigger, wilder and wonderfully open.
It’s also the perfect reminder to pace yourself. There’s a long journey ahead, and this is just the beginning.

Otter Pool
Tucked away along the legendary Raiders Road, Otter Pool is one of those places that encourages you to stop, breathe and take stock. Framed by forest and running water, it’s a beautifully calm spot and the location of one of our Sportive feed zones.
Despite the name, we’ve yet to see an actual otter there, but the sense of tranquillity is guaranteed. Riders arrive here with smiles, sharing stories, refilling bottles and refuelling before heading back out into the forest.
It’s a reminder that the Gralloch Sportive isn’t about rushing. It’s about enjoying the ride, the surroundings and the shared experience with fellow riders.

Raiders Road
Few gravel roads in the UK are as iconic as Raiders Road, and for good reason. This fast, flowing forest drive follows the River Dee, cutting a clean line through dense woodland and open glades.
The surface invites confidence, the gradients encourage rhythm and the scenery rolls past in a way that feels almost cinematic. Sunlight filters through the trees, the river keeps you company, and the miles seem to disappear beneath your tyres.
For many riders, this is where everything clicks. Legs feel good, the bike hums along and the pure joy of gravel riding takes over.

Loch Grannoch Viewpoint
As the route climbs above Loch Grannoch, the reward is one of the most spectacular views of the entire Sportive.
From above, the loch stretches out below, dark water framed by rolling hills and vast open moorland. It’s a place that feels remote and quietly powerful, a true snapshot of the wild character of Galloway.
This is a moment to pause, even briefly. Take it in, snap a photo if you must, and appreciate just how special it is to be riding your bike through a landscape like this.

Big Water of Fleet Viaduct
As the gravel sections draw to a close, the route delivers one final, unforgettable landmark: the Big Water of Fleet Viaduct.
Built as part of the historic Portpatrick Railway Line, the viaduct rises impressively above the river below. It’s bold, imposing and a striking contrast to the natural scenery you’ve been immersed in all day.
For Sportive riders, it also signals a shift. The hardest gravel is behind you, the journey is beginning to turn homeward and there’s a deep sense of satisfaction in knowing you’ve earned every view along the way.
A journey worth savouring
The Gralloch Sportive isn’t just about distance or elevation. It’s about the journey. The quiet roads, the sweeping vistas, the shared moments at feed zones and the feeling of riding somewhere truly special.
If you’re looking for a Sportive that blends world-class gravel with unforgettable scenery and a warm, welcoming atmosphere, this is it.
